A few weeks back, we reported about a status update made on Facebook that got a student expelled from school. That story got a lot of attention, and we managed to brew quite a discussion on our own site about whether or not the student’s actions constituted an expulsion. Today word has been ablaze online about a student who was denied his admission to Harvard because he posted a an inappropriate update on the social networking site. It appears that a faculty member from the school spotted the update and referred the matter to his/her superiors. From what we can tell at the moment, this latest “Status Update Rejected from Harvard” story is nothing more than a spoof. There are no credible news sites reporting on the topic and therefore we have to assume its just some person trying to divert attention upon themselves. There are screenshots of this supposed Status Update Rejected from Harvard floating around on the internet. The one we found is completely blurred out, so it is difficult to tell what exactly the student said. A comment on the person’s page made by a friend warned him/her that schools are known for looking up prospective students online, and that someone from Duke University was supposedly denied admission due to some questionable material found online. We will give you a transcript of the status update below to help you determine its legitimacy. TRANSCRIPT: Jacob:I just got my admittance letters into Yale, Duke, Northwestern, Penn, and Columbia, Now Harvard is begging my ass to go to their school. Fully PAID SCHOLARSHIP. LOL. Hm…….Ahahahaha naw kiss my ass. Fu$k Harvard! I don’t need no harvard or no scholarship HAHA! No really though, I’m going to harvard guys. Wooooo! =D Noah: Don’t say that about harvard lol. I heard some colleges check facebook profiles and they could reject you for saying that….It’s been on the news. Some kid got admitted to Duke, but after he posted some pics of being drunk he got rejected. Be Careful. Mar 14 at 8:41pm Jacob: Hahaha don’t worry bro Mar 14 at 8:44pm

In another case of teen stupidity that comes out of Brevard County Florida, a teen is facing expulsion after posting a highly inappropriate “Status Update” on his Facebook page. The teen, a student at Edgewood Senior High School, made threats against his English teacher, Kathy Bowen, in her impending return to the school. Bowen had been on medical leave for an unspecified time period.

According to students at the school, the teen who posted the update is known to be a class clown type. As you might imagine, students are rallying behind him. However, most of us will agree in saying that this prank went a bit too far. Although there has been no official word from the district as to what specific action will be taken against the student, we do know he is currently suspended.

The student was served formal notice of the suspension via Facebook, where it appears that a staff member from the school saw the update and informed him that he shouldn’t bother coming back to school. The official then informed the student that an expulsion letter would be mailed to his house.

Below you will find a transcript of the update posted on Facebook and the accompanying commentary from the student’s Facebook friends.

The Status Update That Got a Student Expelled from School:

I FU$KING HATE SCHOOL AT THAT STUPID BITCH OF A PRINCIPAL. I swear tomorrow im going to slit that fu$king bitch’s throat and laugh while she spews blood. Then I’m going to tie up all the teachers and pour gasoline on them and let them burn in fu$king hell. fu$k you school.

Katrina (school official): Did you know your principal can read this? This is a horrific level of disrespect to our faculty. Death threats are not a joke. Do not even bother coming to school tomorrow. I will be mailing an expulsion letter to your house. You may go to the unified school district office to enroll yourself in another school. The last thing we want to have our students act in your behavior.

Justin: LOLLOLLOLLOLLOL OWNED

Marcus: Oh shat you added the principal?

Abraham: oh my god…

Alex: ok, seriously wtf did you just do david

Marlene: PRINCIPAL OWNAGEEE! no really though seriously? you’re getting expelled or is the principal just joking?

Today we have another story for you that yet again highlights the dangers of acting like a loose cannon online. This story is out of Oregon, where a football player has been dismissed from his team from making an inappropriate post to his Facebook page. Although these posts are no longer available online for viewing, media outlets are reporting that both of the posts contained very “colorful” language. While we all consider profiles on Facebook and Myspace to be free territory, where we can ramble about whatever exists under the sun, this is not the case.

This player, Jamere Holland, took to his Facebook blog to blast the actions of team administrators, who had suspended a player the day before for an arrest stemming from alcohol misuse, according to USA Today. This player, Kiko Alonso, was arrested this past Saturday. While Jamere Holland’s coach didn’t make specific comments about the dismissal, when a reporter asked whether it had anything to do with a Facebook posting, the coach replied something to the effect of yes. These latest two dismissals follow a string of others, three in which arrests were involved. We can only hope that the Ducks get their behavior in order before they lose any other players.

A six month study by Danah Boyd from UC Berkeley into teens using the social networking sites Facebook and Myspace has found that Myspace users tend to be the less sucessful. According to the study, Myspace teen users are those who typically acquire a job directly after high school, as opposed to after college. Boyd claims that there are geographical, racial, and religious factors that influence which site teens use. She claims Facebook users “…are in honors classes…live in a world dictated by after school activities.”

In her opinion the Myspace demographic consists of “…the kids who are socially ostracized at school because they are geeks, freaks, or queers…” Mrs. Boyd, I have news for you, your time would be better spent conducting other studies that could make a positive impact on the world. It’s obviously false to characterize Myspace users as this or that. Myspace is home to millions of members. Thus, it would be rather impossible to classify them as Mrs. Boyd’s study suggests.
