After a stint in a Texas hospital to undergo an appendectomy earlier this month, Bret Michaels has been placed back under medical care after suffering from an apparent brain hemorrhage. Michaels was rushed to the emergency room Thursday after having suffered a series of intense headaches. Doctors at the hospital conducted various brains scans on the former Poison vocalist and found that Michaels had suffered from a subarachnoid hemorrhage, or internal bleeding that occurs near the brain stem. According to the latest reports, Michaels continues to be monitored in the intensive care unit as doctors try to pinpoint the exact cause of the hemorrhage. There have been no confirmed reports that his appendectomy surgery may have had an influence on his present medical condition.

Michaels, who suffers from Type-1 diabetes was most recently featured in the NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice,” where he chose the American Diabetes Association as his charity of choice. Six workers at a West Virgina coal mine are reported to have died after an explosion that occurred at the mine, according to major media outlets including CNN and MSNBC. It is feared that more than twenty others may have been trapped in the mine as a result of the explosion, although no reports have confirmed this suspicion.

There is no word on what may have caused the explosion. The blast is believed to have occurred at approximately 3 p.m. at the Massey Energy Upper Big Branch mine, which is located in Raleigh County. Emergency personnel are currently on scene trying to determine what may have caused the catastrophe, and more importantly, attempting to learn whether or not miners may be trapped in the rubble. Officials that operate the mine have yet to comment on the incident.

This is not the first time that an emergency type situation has occurred at the mine. Within the past decade, at least 3 other incidents occurred where workers were seriously injured or killed. These were not injuries were not sustained from an explosion-type event. We can only hope that these missing persons become accounted for and that officials determine what may have set off the explosion.

Some saddening news out of Massachusetts where a high school teenager has been stabbed to death after an apparent conflict outside a restaurant. According to the Associated Press, Conor Reynolds, the 17 year old victim of this tragic act of violence, was gathered with nearly 250 friends at a local restaurant at the time of the stabbing. Reynolds was a soccer star at the school and was set to graduate this year. His friend was also injured in the stabbing, which appears to have occurred without any rhyme or reason. The attacker approached both boys outside the establishment, which had no security personnel on staff for the event. It is unclear at this time whether either of the victims knew the perpetrator, who has yet to be apprehended by police.

It appears that drinking activity which was taking place at the restaurant may have been a factor in the crime, although investigators have not confirmed this. What is certain is that the suspect continues to be at large and that police can use any information attendees at the party may have to help bring this case to a close.

Reynolds’ family members and friends are obviously going through a tough time trying to cope with his ultimately untimely death and our thoughts are with them.

John Patrick Bedell was seriously injured after the two officers he initially shot fired back. Some reports are stating that he has died from these injuries. If this is indeed the case, investigators will have a more difficult time trying to piece together what drove Bedell to commit such a crime. The Bedell incident follows yet another attack on Federal grounds, which occurred at an IRS office in Texas. A Texan man flew a small aircraft into the building, where fortunately only few casualties were sustained. Police later uncovered that the man had become severely disgruntled with the operation of the U.S. government.

We can only hope that people find more effective and less violent channels for getting their opinions heard. As far as the case is concerned, we won’t know for some time whether that was the underlying issue. For the time being, we are happy to see the officers have pulled through without injuries yet there is that disappointment that the perpetrator won’t be tried for his crime.

At about 2AM, Billy Powell was pronounced dead. He was 56 and had a history of heart problems. An autopsy is not expected to be performed.

Billy Powell joined Lynyrd Skynyrd shortly after the initial formation of the band, which occurred in 1966. Powell joined some 6 years thereafter. He evaded death in 1977 when one of the group’s planes crashed. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zandt, backup vocalist Cassie Gaines, and Steven Gaines were killed in that accident.
