Ventura Tsunami – California
Ventura County California continues to remain on a tsunami advisory tonight following a tragic earthquake that struck the nation of Chile last night. The 8.8 earthquake which struck off the coast of the nation is reported to have caused immense damage. Casualties have been reported, and many structures have now been rendered uninhabitable. President Barack Obama has announced his willingness to help the nation out in any way possible. According to Chilean officials, they already have the resources needed to start recovery efforts.
The quake triggered tsunami warnings all around the pacific coast, in areas including Australia and New Zealand. Hawaiian residents were on edge this evening after reports were circulating that large waves may batter the island. Fortunately, the tallest waves reported measured 3 feet in height. Japan is the latest nation amongst the barrage of those threatened that fears tall tsunami waves may be on the way. According to reports, a 9ft wave is not out of the question.
Although a Ventura Tsunami may not be in our future, the displacement of water caused by the earthquake did cause damage to an underwater sensor. No property or injured persons have been reported, although the tsunami has caused some erosion along the coastline. Ventura residents, as well as anyone else that resides remotely near the coastline should remain particularly vigilant tonight as tsunami waves can be unpredictable.
