South Park Creators Go Too Far

South Park has been known to cross some boundaries when it comes to providing some comedic value to its audience members. When South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone put together a concept for the 200th episode of the series, they didn’t envision death threats in their future. This is what they got after Comedy Central aired the episode last week, which depicted a smattering of characters featured in past episodes on the search for the Islamic prophet known as Muhammad. According to the New York Times, the episode was offensive enough to elicit a response from the Islamic group known as Revolution Muslim. In a message intended for the duo posted on the group’s website, the creators were warned that they could face a similar fate to that of Theo Van Gogh, who was killed by an Islamic extremist after covering a touchy subject matter in one of his movies.

Comedy Central has taken the threats seriously, going as far as censoring the episode. This is not surprising considering the group has rallied behind jihadist activities in the past.

We can only hope the creators of South Park realize that there are limits to to what they can joke about and for good reasons.
