Lufthansa Pilots Go on Strike
Pilots for the airliner Lufthansa have gone on strike, hoping the company will provide all pilots the same labor conditions afforded to those contracted from Germany. According to representatives from the airliner, nearly 800 flights were canceled today as a result of the strike. International flights are mostly affected. The strike was organized by the Cockpit pilots union, which failed to come to terms with the airliner as far as problem areas are concerned. It is unclear whether the strike will continue beyond the 4-day mark if negotiations are not made. Projections have yet to made as far as what sort of financial loss Lufthansa may incur as a result of the strike, but as the figures seem to indicate, the margins could be astronomical. According to CNN, Europe is currently a hotbed of labor discontent, with workers in various sectors organizing strikes to get demands of various sorts met.
Lufthansa, which is the largest airliner in Europe, currently employs nearly 40,000 men and women, with operations in Germany, the United States, and various other parts of the world. Most of the employees which the company retains are based out of Frankfurt. The company headquarters is located in Cologne. Among the company’s subsidiaries include British Airways, and the United States-based budget airliner Jet Blue.
