Sarah Lunde trial begins
Convicted sex offender David Lee Onstott went on trial today for his role in the killing of a Florida teen nearly three years ago. He is facing multiple charges, including attempted sexual battery and first degree murder. Onstott is alleged to have confessed to the crime during his time in jail. He was allegedly speaking to his mother when he confessed to killing Sarah Lunde. Onstott is also believed to have confessed to the crime to other inmates during his time in jail.
The jury is scheduled to hear Onstott’s confession in the form of an audio recording. Onstott is said to have confessed to the crime in a whispered tone to his mother. Defense attorneys, however, argue that the recording is useless, given its inaudible nature.
Onstott’s motivation for killing Sarah Lunde is still unclear. He went to the Lunde household three years ago to allegedly speak to Sarah’s mother – his former girlfriend at the time. When there was no sight of her, Onstott took it upon himself to strangle the child.
Onstott went to great lengths to conceal the body of Sarah Lunde. He dumped her body into a pond after weighing it down with concrete.
The prosecutor’s case consists of entirely circumstantial evidence. Forensic evidence in the investigation has been extremely hard to come by.
Onstott’s attorney argues that the crime was perpetrated by someone other that Onstott. According to his attorney, John Skye, Sarah Lunde was murdered after going after her brother, who failed to return hope after going food shopping.
Onstott had a criminal record before killing Sarah Lunde. In 1995, he was convicted of sexual battery. 10 years later, Sarah Lunde went missing in Florida. The case of Sarah Lunde has been compared to that of Jessica Lunsford, a nine year old teen that was also abducted and subsequently raped and murdered. This crime also occurred in the Florida area.
The perpetrator of the crime, John Couey was also a convicted sex offender and sentenced to death for his role in the murder.
We’re extremely glad to see that he Sarah Lunde case is moving to court. We can only imagine the anguish Sarah’s parents and close family members have had to endure while waiting for the trial to begin. Why anyone would commit such a heinous and selfish crime is way beyond us. However, we sincerely hope that family and close friends of Sarah Lunde will be able to receive the closure that they want from this case.
As for David Lee Onstott, it is our hope that he is tried to the fullest extent of the law. There is no doubt in our heads that he committed the crime. Although many believe the death penalty in this case is unlikely, we think it’d fit Onstott for the sort of crime he committed. However, many consider life in prison to be just as, or even worse.
