Most never been put in a position where we had to try to defy death. Unfortunately there are those who have. Take for example, Deborah Scaling Kiley. When Deborah went sailing on a yacht in September, she had no idea the sort of circumstances she would shortly land in. Deborah was going from New England to Florida and was traveling with a crew of other people.

During Deborah Scaling Kiley’s trip, the yeah unfortunately saying and left her and her crew members stranded in the ocean. What came next is rather shocking – the crewmembers encountered sharks in the Atlantic Ocean.

After the encounter with the sharks, Deborah and one other person were the only survivors. As you might guess Deborah’s experience encouraged her to completely turn her life around. She went from a prior profession to become a motivational speaker and an author.

In an interview with CNN, Deborah Scaling Kiley described the ordeal. She says that her and her crew members were taking the boat to people in Florida, potential buyers for the yacht. During the trip, entire crew encountered a storm, what Deborah characterized as the storm like the one from the movie “The Perfect Storm.” The storm, being extremely violent, led the ship to sink. According to Deborah Scaling Kiley, the ship sank relatively quickly. Thus, the crew had very little time to contact Coast Guard officials or any other nearby boaters for help.

Deborah says that the waves which her and her crewmates had to endure once the ship sank were extremely tall. Estimates put them at around 45 to 50 feet with nearby wind gusting well over 100 miles an hour.

As you would guess, the additional details surrounding the incident are rather gruesome. The crewmembers each died under various circumstances, one from consuming the salt water. For those of you are familiar with what consuming salt water does to the body, you know that chances of survival after consuming large amounts of it are rather slim.

It is unfortunate that only Deborah was able to survive with another crewmate, and that the others were not able to pull through the incident. We hope that people take this incident to heart and remember that one should not take life for granted. Deborah Scaling Kiley, nor her crewmembers, had expected for such a thing to happen. And when they were placed in such unhelpful circumstances, they tried their best to persevere, and some made it out alive.
